Intel, Samsung May Compete for Infineon Mobile-Phone Unit, Citigroup Says

Intel Corp. and Samsung Electronics Co., the world’s two-largest chip companies, may compete to acquire Infineon Technologies AG’s mobile-phone business, according to Citigroup.

An acquisition or partnership with Samsung would be a better fit for the German chipmaker’s business and thus more likely, Glen Yeung, a San Francisco-based Citigroup analyst, said today in a research report.

Samsung, also the world’s second-largest maker of mobile phones, would use Infineon’s technology to help broaden its chip business beyond memory, Yeung wrote. Intel chips run more than 80 percent of the world’s personal computers, making the company the biggest semiconductor maker. It is trying to parlay its dominance of PCs into a slice of the handset market.

Intel doesn’t comment on rumor or speculation, said Chuck Mulloy, a spokesman for Santa Clara, California-based Intel. Christian Hoenicke, a spokesman for Neubiberg, Germany-based Infineon, declined to comment. Chris Goodhart, a U.S.-based spokeswoman for Samsung, which is based in Suwon, South Korea, didn’t immediately return calls seeking comment.

Earlier today, Infineon Chief Executive Officer Peter Bauer said he continues to be happy with the wireless solutions business. The chipmaker hired JPMorgan Chase & Co. and opened a data room for potential buyers to review its books, according to a person familiar with the matter who asked not be identified by name because it hasn’t been made public yet.

Infineon’s wireless-solutions business makes baseband processors, the chips that control the radio functions in phones. It will have sales of 1.26 billion euros ($1.63 billion) this year, a gain of 29 percent, according to a Citigroup estimate.

Largest Customers

Its two largest customers are Apple Inc. and LG Electronics Inc., each supplying about 30 percent of sales. An Infineon baseband chip powers Apple’s iPhone. The unit also supplies Nokia Oyj, Samsung and Research In Motion Ltd., according to Yeung’s report.

Intel fell 5 cents to $21.53 at 12.18 p.m. New York time in Nasdaq Stock Market trading. Infineon rose 13 cents to 5.18 euros in Frankfurt.

About 315 million mobile phones shipped in the first quarter, according to Gartner Inc. That’s almost quadruple the 84 million PCs shipped in the period.

To contact the reporter on this story: Ian King in San Francisco at ianking@bloomberg.net.

Intel and Samsung may both be looking to acquire Infineon, an interesting development in both stocks and semiconductor manufacturing.

Request for Support to Discipline State Officials Involved in a Raid on a Women's Shelter in Mexico

Urgent Alert: Mexico
July 2010

Take action against the officials who raided a high security women’s shelter in Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua State

Hiam Abd El Samad

On 9 June 2010, fourteen men, six of whom were carrying high-powered weapons, arrived at the secret facilities of Sin Violencia A.C. (“Without Violence”), the only high security shelter in Ciudad Juárez and Chihuahua State, Mexico, for women at extreme risk of violence. Heading the group was court clerk Román García, who presented a copy of an official letter signed by the First Judge of the Bravos Judicial District Family Court, Lic. Guadalupe Manuel de Santiago Aguayo. The letter authorized the use of force and breaking of locks in order to take immediate custody of a minor girl named in the letter. However, the letter was not addressed to the shelter. Accordingly, the shelter staff refused to allow the men to enter and asked for a search warrant, which the men did not have. The staff also informed the men that the girl was not at the shelter, and further explained that it was not possible to allow them to enter since it was a high-risk shelter where the protocols prohibited the entry of men, especially armed men.

The men threatened to send the shelter staff to prison and one of them, while showing his weapon, told the staff, “I invite you all to cooperate, or I will have no other choice but to act.” Another took the shelter director’s identification card saying that now he had more information about who was opposing them and further threatened, “You all are going to regret this, you’re going to get into trouble, it is better that you cooperate, and we’re going to tear down the doors and break the locks.”

Faced with threats of violence, the shelter staff was obliged to open the doors of the facility. The men entered the shelter violently, throwing furniture around, looking under beds and creating a hostile and terrifying situation for the resident women and children who had previously escaped violent situations in their homes. The men did not find the girl as she was not in the shelter.

TAKE ACTION!

Mexico’s General Law on Women’s Access to a Life Free of Violence, which is applicable in the State of Chihuahua, has been hailed internationally as a landmark law that comprehensively and holistically addresses all forms of violence against women. This law requires all levels of government to encourage the establishment and maintenance of shelters for victims and their children; acknowledges the need to keep the location of such shelters confidential; and stipulates that “shelters shall be safe places for victims, which means their location cannot be provided to persons unauthorized to go there.”

The law also recognizes that public servants may through their acts or omissions perpetrate violence against women and requires the government to “[s]trengthen the criminal and civil framework to ensure punishment for those who engage in harassment or persecution.” Mexico’s national legislation is further supported by its international commitments under the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women and the Inter-American Convention on the Prevention, Punishment and Eradication of Violence against Women.

The actions of the government officials who stormed the shelter constituted violence against women perpetrated by agents of the state and were in violation of Mexico’s national legislation and international obligations.

Recommended Actions

Please write to the Head of the Chihuahua State Supreme Court and the Governor of Chihuahua and ask them to take disciplinary action against the state officials involved in the raid on the shelter and to look into the possibility of prosecuting these officials who have so blatantly violated both the letter and the spirit of Mexico’s General Law on Women’s Access to a Life Free of Violence. Ask them also to ensure that relevant government officials are thoroughly trained in implementing this law and in conducting themselves appropriately towards victims of violence and their defenders. Remind them of their obligations under state, federal and international law to protect the human rights of women. TAKE ACTION!

The "Brief Safe" Fake Secret Compartment Dirty Underwear

The "Brief Safe" is an innovative diversion safe that can secure your cash, documents, and other small valuables from inquisitive eyes and thieving hands, both at home and when you're traveling. Items can be hidden right under their noses with these specially-designed briefs which contain a fly-accessed 4" x 10" secret compartment with Velcro closure and "special markings" on the lower rear portion. Leave the "Brief Safe" in plain view in your laundry basket or washing machine at home, or in your suitcase in a hotel room - even the most hardened burgler or most curious snoop will "skid" to a screeching halt as soon as they see them. (Wouldn't you?) Made in USA. One size. Color: white (and brown).

This is the most disgusting security measure I've ever seen, but it would probably work as long as your safe doesn't end up looking unnaturally stuffed.

Damn Vulnerable Linux - The most vulnerable and exploitable operating system ever!

Damn Vulnerable Linux is the most complete training environment for IT security with over 500.000 downloads. It includes all tools you need ready to go. Additionally tons of training material and exercises are included. Damn Vulnerable Linux works fine under Windows, Linux and Mac OSX using any virtual machine such as VMware, Qemu or KVM. You can let it run installed natively on a standard PC or even boot it from USB.

Damn Vulnerable Linux (DVL) is everything a good Linux distribution isn't. Its developers have spent hours stuffing it with broken, ill-configured, outdated, and exploitable software that makes it vulnerable to attacks. DVL isn't built to run on your desktop - it's a learning tool for security students.

The main idea behind DVL was to build up a training system that I could use for my university lectures. My goal was to design a Linux system that was as vulnerable as possible, to teach topics such as reverse code engineering, buffer overflows, shellcode development, Web exploitation, and SQL injection.

An interesting training environment for black hats and white hats.

Pet owners defend killer beavers

The dogs that were attacked had been swimming after the beavers. The dogs that were attacked had been swimming after the beavers. (CBC)

People in Red Deer, Alta., want the city to move, rather than kill, beavers that have attacked at least six dogs in an off-leash park.

Six beaver attacks in the last two weeks have been confirmed at Three Mile Bend, an off-leash park in the central Alberta city. A husky died of its injuries, while other dogs are recovering from their tangles with the rodents.

Most dogs were swimming after the beavers in the park's ponds when the attacks occurred.

Penny, an eight-year-old Labrador cross, suffered a 7.5-centimetre wound on her backside, said owner Trudy Maygard. When the bleeding dog was taken to the vet the next day, seven wounds were found.

Parks supervisor Trevor Poth said Wednesday that the beavers would have to be trapped and killed because of the severity of the attacks. But most dog owners said they don't blame the beavers.

"I don't think killing an animal is going to be a solution to anything," said Janelle McMurray.

Three Mile Bend is a popular off-leash area for dogs, and the pond is also home to up to a dozen beavers. Three Mile Bend is a popular off-leash area for dogs, and the pond is also home to up to a dozen beavers. (CBC)

"It is a natural animal. It is up to dog owners around here to make sure their dogs aren't bugging it," said Brad Cotter.

Added Carrie McAunaul: "They're protecting their kids, and you can't blame them."

Media attention has led to offers from private property owners to allow the beavers to live on their land, Poth told CBC News on Thursday. Parks staff are exploring those options, but killing the beavers has not been ruled out as a worst-case scenario.

This is the first time there have been any problems with aggressive wildlife in the park's 20-year history, said Poth. About six to 12 beavers live at Three Mile Bend, he said.

The city is expected to decide on the beavers' fate in the next two weeks.

Save the beavers! Unfortunately, the dogs are following their instincts, but the owners are not controlling them. I've seen a dog chase a swan, which can be vicious and will keep swimming in circles until the dog drowns because it won't stop chasing a bird even when it's exhausted. Even in a dog park where the dogs are allowed off the leash, the owners are responsible for controlling their pets.

What Apple Must Do to Stop the Bleeding

It’d be an understatement to say that this has been a terrible week for Apple, and we haven’t even reached the halfway point.

On Monday, Consumer Reports dealt a devastating blow to the iPhone 4 when it declined to recommend the device to consumers due to its antenna reception problem. Consumer Reports concluded from its tests that cell reception is indeed lost if you cover up the small gap between the two metal bands on the bottom corner of the phone. The media quickly picked up the story.

Tuesday wasn’t any better for the tech giant. Consumer Reports slammed Apple for not providing a fix to customers at no extra cost. Some have even suggested that a recall was imminent — an endeavor that would cost the company $1.5 billion.

All of this news resulted in a sharp dive in Apple’s stock price, although it has since made a partial recovery. There are even class action lawsuits waiting in the wings.

Apple has a nightmare on its hands and no software fix will make the problem go away. The issue has taken on a life of its own.

The situation isn’t impossible for Apple to recover from. However, the company needs to take action, and it needs to do it quickly. Here are what my top five priorities would be if I were in Steve Jobs’s shoes:

1. Acknowledge That the Antenna Problem Is Real

While the data isn’t entirely conclusive, you can say that the data overwhelmingly points to one conclusion: The iPhone has an antenna problem. The iPhone antenna issue has been replicated in countless YouTube (YouTube

) videos and by multiple media organizations, including us. Apple’s internal documents show that they know the issue is real.

This is almost certainly a hardware issue, and it’s time that Apple stopped being coy and just admitted that the phone does have reception problems. The current string of denials and half-truths won’t have any legs as the pressure mounts and lawyers come knocking.

The best thing the company can do is issue an open letter on the antenna issue, ideally from Steve Jobs himself. The key to making this go away is transparency.

2. Go into the Technical Details

Once Apple acknowledges the problem, it needs to give up details, such as the science behind the antenna issue, why the company didn’t catch it during testing and potential fixes.

Don’t spare the public the complicated and scientific issues behind the iPhone’s design and how different grips affect reception — anything less won’t appease a critical public.

3. Roll Out the Software Update

Apple has promised a software update earlier this month to “fix” the formula used to calculate signal bar strength display, which the company pointed to as the root of the iPhone antenna problem.

While we believe that the software fix was meant to be a decoy to the real hardware issue, the company has already committed to the software update, and it should roll it out as promised. Don’t keep trying to point to software as the problem, though. Most people are aware that it’s not a software bug causing the antenna issue and treating it as such is just demeaning and condescending to iPhone users everywhere.

4. Make the Bumpers Free

Out of all of my suggestions, this one is the key. Those iPhone bumpers may cost $29.00 in the Apple Store (Apple Store

), but in reality the rubber and plastic mold only costs a fraction of that price (possibly around $1 per bumper).

Providing that accessory to customers for free solves the antenna issue, as bare skin has to touch the iPhone 4’s metal casing in order to drop signal. It’s not an ideal fix, but it’s far better than the other option: a recall.

5. No Matter What, Don’t Issue an iPhone 4 Recall

Some have suggested that Apple should recall the iPhone 4. That isn’t a simple affair. In fact, most users would be more annoyed and upset than pleased with the Cupertino-based company.

Let’s play out the scenario. Apple performs a recall of its devices. Millions of people are annoyed as they either have to give up their device or keep a clearly defective one. Apple, already at peak production capacity, would take weeks — if not months — to replace the phones. Estimates place the cost of a recall in the billions.

Here’s the truth: The iPhone 4 antenna issue isn’t a hazardous one. It isn’t exploding in people’s hands, it isn’t cutting anyone’s palms randomly, and it isn’t suddenly bursting into flames. Those are critical issues that would require a recall.

The antenna issue, while important and a problem that Apple should have found and addressed before the product’s launch last month, doesn’t rise to that level. Recalls are meant only as a last resort. Do you think Ford is going to recall all of its cars for a faulty radio?

Apple, while it may be feeling the pressure, can’t cave to it. There is a balance here. It has to be truthful with what’s actually wrong with the iPhone antenna and what is not. It has to keep its emotions in check as it discusses the antenna independent of the iPhone 4’s many other amazing features. And finally, the company has to give customers something to solve the issue.

Free bumpers seem like the appropriate middle ground. A recall is over-the-top extreme and hurts rather than helps consumers in the end.

"Do you think Ford is going to recall all of its cars for a faulty radio?" Unfortunately, the antenna in a phone is more like the engine in the car than the radio. Without the antenna working properly, the phone is useless. While it's not a safety issue, having a faulty antenna in the iPhone is a very serious quality of use problem.
