This morning the doctor's office called and let us know that they had collected seven eggs from me, of which four had been able to be fertilized into embryos. About 50% success rate in fertilization is normal, so this is good news. Today I started a new drug protocol to prepare for implantation, including daily injections of progesterone, daily use of progesterone cream, prednisone for 5 days and estrogen patches every other day, in addition to continuing antibiotics. I'm scheduled for embryo transfer Tuesday morning.

As soon as that was explained to me, it made sense and I began adjusting my expectations and reevaluating my experiences. The right side of my head shouldn't feel like the left side of my head because it's not symmetrical. In general, I've had a lot more problems with my right side and tend to be very left brain dominant in my studies and thinking. I'm very right sided in my motor control, which is controlled by the left side of the brain. My right eye has scarring in the retina and much worse vision than my left. This has always been attributed to an infection as a fetus, but it may be that the infection had more of an effect on my development than previously thought. My appendectomy as a young child left me a scar on my right side. Pain from my herniated disk tends to radiate to the right. My right ankle required surgery to correct a ligament. Most recently, although my left ovary has been quite stimulated by fertility treatments, showing 7 maturing follicles in this morning's ultrasound, my right ovary is very difficult to image and is not developing mature follicles. The only issues that I have had on my left side, a broken left wrist and tendinitis in my elbow, are attributable to physical injuries rather than infection or malformation. Although my right side is very useful, I am much more happy judging it on its own, rather than expecting it to be as healthy as my left side. I now judge each side separately for what is normal for it. The issues that I have stemming from the right side are generally not abnormal for me and simply need to be resolved or accepted as a personal limitation.

I tried downloading the package again, then I tried manually unzipping it, still with the same results. So, I tried contacting HP Support through online chat. After entering my product and serial numbers, the first response I received was that it was out of warranty and I would have to pay $25 to continue. Jimi also asked what was wrong with my printer, which indicated that he hadn't taken the time to read the question that I submitted which explained the situation and the error I had received. I explained that I was reporting an error in the installation of the driver package and had a previous version available that would probably work for me. He downloaded the package and the installation worked for him, so I was back to paying $25 for support if I wanted to investigate further. Considering that I could buy the exact same laser printer or a similar one for about $300, it doesn't make sense for me to pay $25 when I have a solution on hand. Luckily, I save all my printer driver downloads, so I still have the one that I downloaded last March that has worked for me before. In this case there may be a couple more troubleshooting steps I can go through, like deleting the old printer files because it may be trying to unzip to the same location as the old driver package. However, this is a result of sloppy programming if it is the issue and most people wouldn't know what to try once they get this type of error.
This experience just leaves a bad taste in my mouth for HP. In the past, I have been very enthusiastic about HP printers and wouldn't consider a different brand because HP had the best quality printers and support. If they're not willing to support a printer that's only a couple of years old through online chat that I've barely used and experienced an issue based on software that they have changed, that's horrible service and I'm much more likely to consider other brands, especially now that the price point is much lower than when I originally bought the printer. HP may be saving on support costs by trying to charge for support, but they just shot their brand loyalty in the foot and, given that we tend to buy a new laserjet printer every couple of years, $25 is a lot less than the thousands of dollars in sales they may have just lost.

The technique is targeted at helping women who have defective mitochondria, which can cause a wide variety of metabolic diseases. However, it could also be used by women in alternative lifestyles to ensure that their offspring has some of their genetic material. Lesbian women could both contribute to their egg and have it fertilized by a sperm donor. Two women and a man in a long term trinogamous relationship could choose to use this reproductive technique to include genetic material from all three partners. Gay men and trinogamous relationships with two men and a woman will have to wait for another breakthrough where males' DNA can be mixed without genetic abnormalities being introduced.
In the United States, there is little regulation of advanced fertility treatments because the US government has provided very little monetary support for IVF and embryonic stem cell research. This new technique will present even more interesting challenges in the divorce courts. When there are children with genetic contributions from two women or three parents, the courts will have a much harder time devaluing the contribution of non-traditional spouses to a relationship when deciding custody arrangements.
