Today, a co-worker sent me a link to a great new technology. For years, graphic editors have been cropping, resizing and editing photos to make them fit the size and shape that's needed for publication. This is often a tedious process even for experienced editors. Shai Avidan and Ariel Shamir have developed a tool for automatically resizing images using seam carving, while maintaining important features and/or elimating undesired areas. A paper (20 Mb) on this technology is available and video of their tool in use can be found on YouTube. I can't wait until this is publicly available through photo editing software and browsers.
