A month ago, my husband and I went out to fighter practice in Maricopa and took pictures. Yes, it is dangerous like any fighting sport. They often come away with impressive bruises from fighter practice, but serious injuries are rare.
As soon as Jim's wrist heals from the last time he was fighting without a demi-gauntlet, which is an optional piece of armor in the SCA, he'll be back in armor, too. The demi-gauntlet protects the 1/2 inch of wrist area between the baskethilt on the sword and van braces on their lower arms.
In the news today, I read about the Vatican's release of "Guidelines for the Pastoral Care of the Road," 10 commandments for proper conduct while driving, including "Cars shall not be for you an expression of power and domination, and an occasion of sin." In researching this story, I could not find the original document, but I did find notes from Vatican conferences on the subject, for example, Final Document of the II International Meeting on the Pastoral Care of the Road and The Past, Present and Future of the Apostolate of the Road. While the news stories are, not surprisingly, glib on the subject, I was impressed by the depth of concern for the welfare of people expressed, from concern for the number of people injured and killed in car accidents to the care of street people and truckers. I also found it interesting how the discussions were tied to Jesus as a traveler.
