Browser Wars

No, not Internet Explorer vs. Netscape nor Navigator vs. Firefox .... I'm talking about free browser-based MMORPGs (Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games). Lately, I've been sucked into a new category of games. These are mostly based at least loosely on what I believe to be the original from the various Wikis, Urban Dead. What they share in common is the following:

  • Free, unless you choose to donate, which can give you various perks. However, if you do play regularly, donate. No one is getting rich off these games. They're typically run by one or two people on a server or two in their home. Bandwidth for allowing everyone to connect and gets expensive the more poeple play.
  • Browser-based (no downloads required)
  • Turn-based (limited actions per time period, generally, either regenerating an Action Point (AP) every 15 to 20 minutes or getting the maximum number of turns (Max AP) renewed at a particular time every day)

Each game has a different premise and implementation. Here are the map-based ones I'm actively playing:

Title: Kingdom of Loathing
Premise: Medieval Pythonesque adventures in a cartoon world
Graphics: Limited
Max AP: 40
Renewal Rate: Daily following backup, approx. 9:30 PM Arizona time
Donation Perks: 1 Mr. Accessory per $10 donation
Comments: Fun to explore and hilarious.

Title: Nexus War
Premise: Angels vs. Demons
Graphics: Minimal
Max AP: 50
Renewal rate: 1/15 minutes
Donation Perks: Additional character slots available for $5 each.
Comments: Starts with three character slots. So, you can try out Good, Unaligned and Evil characters all at once if you'd like. Sophisticated interface.

Title: Shartak
Premise: Natives versus Outsiders
Graphics: Minimal
Max AP: 50
Renewal Rate: 1/20 minutes
Donation Perks: Additional slots for contacts
Comments: Flavor of Pirate of the Carribean

Title: Urban Dead
Premise: Start the game as a Survivor in a Zombie Apocalypse. Play either a Survivor or a Zombie.
Graphics: No
Max AP: 50
Renewal Rate: 1/20 minutes
Donation Perks: Immune from the 160-hits-per-day IP limit for $5
Comments: The original of this type of MMORPG. Well developed mythology.

Title: Vampires! A Dark Alleyway
Premise: Vampires hunting for blood points.
Graphics: No
Max AP: 52
Renewal Rate: 1/20 minutes
Donation Perks: Small donations grant powers. Personalized building for $250+.
Comments: Gain Childer and 10 points of blood by introducing people to the game.
